Neu Iconic - An experimental interactive digital piece

A Reflection & Exploration into University Studio Culture

In contrast to projects where I focus on business goals & objectives, this project required me to capture a culture and experience I went through in Studio Neu Iconic, a unit led by David Cutter at RMIT. How could I create something engaging that encapsulated my memories and reflection into the digital world?

THE BRIEF

Capture the essence of the Studio in an innovative and experimental fashion to promote the studio. Reflect - What did this studio make you feel, what did you learn, what was the culture created in this space? The aim is to represent your experience to other creatives in an engaging manner.

IMPACT

  • Created a engaging & interactive digital experience as a promotional material for past and future students to engage with

  • Promoted the studio in a digital format to expand reach to engage with external creative communities

RESEARCH

STUDIO PARTNER INSIGHTS

To capture the culture of our studio, it was critical to understand everyone's experience. We conducted a class discussion, and I collected the memories and words of my fellow classmates

"exploration/ collaboration / innovation/ impact/ pushing boundaries"

KEY INSIGHTS
  • Everyone felt intimidated by the studio at first

  • Pushing limits and reaching your potential was a focus of the studio

  • Collaboration/community was reinforced as necessary to the design process

  • Impact & Potency were our main teachings

THE DESIGNS

Thrown into a world of
Chaos and Excitement

The experience we had started with intrigue, then it felt like you were being thrown into the deep end. We were immediately pushed to do more as designers, unlike other units, we were given information and lectures on what made designs impactful. We were also given freedom to select any client we wanted. This focus on strategy and newfound independence was scary, yet opened doors to so endless possibilities.

Good design is takes more
than one perspective

Every brief required us to have studio partners. We needed to document our feedback from our studio lead and our peers/collaborators and implement that into our design process. This built a strong community and confidence within our team to reach our potential and help others to reach theirs too.

Pushing limits to create something Neu

Impact comes from creating something that resonates with context and culture, and pushing the boundaries to experiment and innovate. As young designers, our strengths lie within fresh perspectives and emerging creativity. I used interactive web tools to convey this sense of play and innovation.

Starting again & Bringing
what you've learnt

The digital experience was created as a cycle to represent the design process. Every time we start a new project, or a new job, you go through a similar journey. It served as a reminder for me that I want to continue experimenting, being curious, creative and still strategic in all the work I produce.

A Reflection from Me

For my promotional design, I aimed to showcase what the studio meant to me, and also create something unconventional and disruptive to become ‘iconic’. I actually had a lot of fun creating this design, I felt attached to the community I made through the studio, and it gave a ‘full circle,’ sentiment when I made the website with statements and representations of my studio partners.

This design was an intentional act for me to continue in that direction, and hopefully a catalyst for my future practice as a junior designer.
